How to Buy Pre-Loved Clothes Online in Kenya: A Sizing and Condition Guide
3 min read
Buying pre-loved clothes online saves money and gives good pieces a second life. It also means you cannot try anything on. The good news is that a tape measure and a few minutes of reading will get you most of the way there.
Why the size label is only a starting point
Pre-loved clothes come from many brands and countries. A UK 12, a US 8 and an EU 40 are roughly similar on paper, but cuts vary a lot between labels. Older pieces often run smaller than modern sizing, and some garments shrink or stretch with years of washing.
So treat the label as a hint and the measurements as the truth.
Measure yourself once, use it forever
Grab a soft tape measure and note these down in your phone:
- Bust: around the fullest part of your chest, tape level.
- Waist: around the narrowest part of your torso.
- Hips: around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
- Shoulders: from the edge of one shoulder to the other, across your back.
- Inside leg: from the crotch to where you want trousers to end.
- Length: from the top of your shoulder down to where you like dresses or tops to fall.
Measure a piece you already love
This is the most reliable trick. Lay your best-fitting blouse, jeans or dress flat and measure it straight across: armpit to armpit, waist edge to edge, and full length. Double the flat width to get the full circumference.
Now compare those numbers with the measurements of the piece you want. If they are within a centimetre or two, you are in safe territory.
Leave room for the cut
- Blouses and shirts: add a few centimetres of ease at the bust so buttons do not pull.
- Knitwear: can be more forgiving, but wool and acrylic knits may have relaxed with wear.
- Jeans: rigid denim has no give, so match the waist closely. Stretch denim can be a touch smaller.
- Jackets and coats: check shoulders first. Sleeves and hems can be altered by a fundi; shoulders are much harder.
How to read condition notes
Every pre-loved piece has a history. Look for notes on:
- Marks or stains, and where they sit.
- Pilling on knits, which can usually be removed with a fabric shaver.
- Fading on denim and dark cottons, which many people actually prefer.
- Missing buttons or loose hems, both cheap and quick to fix.
- Zips and fastenings, which matter most on bags, skirts and trousers.
Zoom into every photo, especially at the collar, cuffs, underarms and hem. These are the areas that show wear first.
When in doubt, ask
If a measurement is missing or you want a closer look at a seam, just ask before you order. We are happy to measure a piece for you or send another photo. Asking takes a minute and saves you the disappointment of a piece that does not fit.
A quick checklist before you buy
- Compare the piece with your own measurements.
- Check the fabric and whether it stretches.
- Read the condition note and study every photo.
- Think about what you already own that it will go with.
