Caring for pre-loved clothes

Give it a fresh start

Wash any second-hand piece before its first wear. Always follow the care label first; the notes below are general guidance.

Cotton and linen

Machine wash on a gentle cycle and dry in the shade so colours do not fade. Iron linen while it is still slightly damp for a crisp finish.

Denim

Wash less often, inside out, in cold water. Line dry to keep the shape and colour. Skip the tumble dryer.

Knitwear

Hand wash in cool water with a mild soap. Press out the water gently in a towel, never wring, and dry flat. Fold knits instead of hanging them, so the shoulders do not stretch.

Silk and satin

Hand wash cold or spot clean. Dry away from direct sun and press on a low heat with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Leather bags and jackets

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep away from heat and direct sun. Store bags lightly stuffed in a dust bag, and hang jackets on a wide hanger.

Storage

Keep clothes in a cool, dry and airy space. Breathable garment bags protect coats and dresses between seasons. Clothes that are cared for last longer, and may even find a third life later on.
